2012 CT Lowndes & Company Sertoma Classic Cheerleader’s Picnic

On July 19th, the cheerleaders from several of the participating high schools gathered for an afternoon of food, fun, and picture taking. This year’s party, held at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, was no exception. Except for the threat of rain and a few “airplane sized mosquitos” that kept circling, the pavilion and the park offered the perfect setting for team photos and candid shots of the team members enjoying the day’s activities. Each team receives the rules to the Spirit Competition and picks up their game day tickets.

The teams learned all about our new rules for this year’s Best in Sales and Best in Spirit awards. They also talked about who each team would pick for the CT Lowndes 7 Company Football Toss. Every team wins something, but the big winner each evening takes home a $200.00 check for their team! The Rick Hendrick Auto Group also offered up some exciting prizes for the cheerleaders for clicking “Like” on the Charleston Drive’s facebook page.

Cane’s donated sandwiches, chips, and our local Coke distributor donated the drinks. Several Sertoma Club of Charleston members attended this event and pitched in by serving the food, drinks, and acting as photographers for the event. The Music Maker, Sinclair Ray III provided the entertainment and had the girls singing and dancing to their favorite tunes!

On August 16 & 17, the CT Lowndes & Company Sertoma Football Classic will serve as the “kick-off” to the school year and the high school football season. It’s a great way for schools to show off their school spirit and to get their students in gear for the upcoming academic year. The sights and sounds of that evening remain in the hearts and minds of everyone who attend this spectacular event. Having their team showcased under the lights in a college stadium is a once in a lifetime experience for many of the players and cheerleaders. The annual spirit competition for the coveted Alwin Berlin Trophy is special to all of us. It provides the perfect opportunity for our club to recognize a talented and dedicated group of cheerleading squads who partner with us to assist charities throughout the Lowcountry. In addition to vying for the chance to have their high school house the coveted spirit trophy for one year, those squads are volunteering their time to help our community.

The Cheerleaders Appreciation Party is hosted by the members of the Charleston Sertoma Club as a way to say Thank You to the girls and their sponsors for the superior job they do selling tickets to the football classic each year. In addition to selling tickets prior to the night of the games, they also decorate the stadium and bring the crowds to their feet as they cheer their home team on to victory. Each school does their best to encourage crowd participation while displaying a healthy dose of competition and good sportsmanship.

The importance of those ticket sales is unknown to many, but the impact of each and every ticket sold is far reaching. Each team that participates in the Classic receives part of the proceeds. Not only are the teams selling tickets to the greatest football classic this area has ever seen, but the rest of the proceeds from those sales goes right back into our community to assist several nonprofit charities carry out their missions to help those in need. Whether it is sending a child to summer camp, assisting in the fight against the abuse and neglect of children, shedding a little sunlight on a child with cancer, or lending a helping hand to someone in our community who is in crisis, the purchase of a ticket to our classic serves as more than an admission to the game. Each ticket sale provides help, hope, and healing to those who need it most.
